The Writer's Hut, Michael King Centre, Mt Takarunga |
A tui sings a choir in the garden
a looping playlist with The Cicadas
outside inside the writer’s hut
On the second morning
I have to move the desk to the right
To rearrange the view
of the: weepy tree
the squarely pruned hydrangea
the terracotta birdbath
the slope of the grassy maunga
with the distant, white office tower
exclamation-marking the harbour bridge behind
I can’t get the desk right enough
there’s an empty bookcase in the way
So I move my laptop instead
My knees now scrape on a metal hinge
Each time I cross and uncross my legs
But my brain seems content
With the framing of things
And the tui compliments my mahi
